I was enjoying being 50, having sent our youngest child off to college and run my first marathon, looking forward to sharing the empty nest with Rick, my husband of 30 years. I had no family history of cancer and had always been very healthy, so I was not particularly worried when, on March 7, 2001, I was to undergo “routine” surgery to remove what was thought to be a benign fibroid tumor. That’s the day we learned that cancer can sneak up on even the most unlikely, seemingly low risk target. After three months of treatment consisting of radiation, chemotherapy and surgery, I emerged from the experience cancer free, deeply thankful for the wonderful medical care I received at the Gray Cancer Center, Hartford Hospital and buoyed by the love and support of family and friends. Five years older and, due in large part to my experience with cancer, a little wiser, I am embarking on an adventure with Rick to celebrate our 35 years of marriage, my five cancer free years and to raise money for the American Cancer Society. We invite you to share with us, through this website, what will be a most exciting and mentally and physically challenging vacation and join us in the fight against cancer by making a donation on our behalf to the American Cancer Society. To help us reach our goal of raising $25,000, please send a check made payable to the American Cancer Society to Filomeno & Company, c/o Delores Thompson, 80 South Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06107. Unfortunately, although advances in treatment and improvement in mortality continue to be made, cancer remains a serious disease that strikes many of us, young, middle aged, old, rich and poor. We’re sure you, a friend or a family member has experienced the dread that comes along with the diagnosis. The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. For cancer information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, contact the American Cancer Society at 1.800.ACS.2345 or www.cancer.org. In those days when our wonderful adventure seems worse than a bad day at the office, we’ll take encouragement from knowing that we have the support of many and get strength from the belief that each dollar raised will benefit one of you, your friend or a loved one. |
